Insomnia TCM Care
Tossing and turning, vivid dreams with frequent waking, or early waking unable to return to sleep — TCM addresses heart-spleen-kidney patterns, liver stagnation and yin-blood deficiency to harmonise yin and yang and may help restore natural sleep rhythm.

TCM Pattern Types of Insomnia
Insomnia in TCM is termed "sleeplessness" (bu mei). Common patterns include heart-spleen dual deficiency with vivid dreams, palpitations, poor appetite and fatigue; heart-kidney non-interaction with restlessness, sore lower back and dry mouth; liver fire from stagnation linked to stress and chest-rib distension; and phlegm-heat disturbance with head heaviness and greasy yellow coating.
Hong Kong urbanites face chronic work stress, screen blue light, caffeine and irregular schedules — yang fails to enter yin and the spirit cannot rest. At the first visit, Dr. Ng enquires in detail about sleep onset, night waking, dreams, daytime energy and mood, combined with tongue and pulse assessment.
Unlike sole reliance on sleeping pills, TCM care aims to rebuild the body's own sleep mechanisms and may help reduce tolerance and next-day grogginess. If you are taking Western medication, a safe integration plan will be assessed where appropriate.
Some patients also experience early waking, light sleep or excessive dreaming — each may reflect different organ imbalance requiring tailored care. Dr. Ng may suggest a sleep diary to refine formulas at follow-up and gradually restore natural rhythm. Results vary.
TCM Treatment Methods
Internal formulas such as Suan Zao Ren Tang, Gui Pi Tang, Huang Lian E Jiao Tang and Wen Dan Tang are selected by pattern. Acupuncture commonly uses Shenmen, Neiguan, Anmian, Zhaohai and Taixi to calm the spirit. For stress-related insomnia, liver-soothing points and relaxation breathing guidance are added.
Moxibustion or warming therapy may suit yang deficiency with cold limbs. Auricular seed therapy can support home care between visits. Dr. Ng also advises fixed bedtimes, reduced pre-sleep screen time, avoiding evening tea and coffee, and constitution-appropriate calming dietary suggestions.
Many patients report shorter sleep onset, fewer night wakings and improved daytime energy after four to twelve weeks of regular care. Follow-up adjusts formulas based on sleep diaries. Individual results vary.
